Fife Soarers History

Fife Soarers 004

Back in the dark and distant past,a group of fliers from this area used to travel to major events  such as the British Nationals, Radio Glide etc. and do rather well.

One year the B.M.F.A. decided to offer a team prize to the most successful club at the British National Thermal Soaring Championships. Prior to the competition, they were not prepared to accept an entry under the banner of the S.A.A. as they felt that it was not really in the intention of the award to allow all the Scottish fliers to band together as one club.

This decision was accepted by the fliers, but as the group concerned were all from the same small area anyway we formed a club there and then.

Yes you have guessed it, we won the first team award in Thermal Soaring donated by the B.M.F.A.

The founder members of the club were, Nic Wright, Keith Graham and Ron Russell. the middle three (r - l) in top photo.

All three have gone on to have great success within the sport of Model Flying, in the disciplines of slope and thermal flying.

Nic having gone on to win the World F3B Championship and the Viking Race on more than one occasion. Ron and Keith have both had successes at National and Domestic levels of competition.

Ron has written for several model flying magazines as part time employment.

Since then the club competition successes have increased with National successes again being experienced by Brian Sharp. His son Kevin is now chasing for his fathers position.

The last few International Viking Race teams from Scotland have all come from the ranks of the club. The Viking Race is the premier International Slope Racing meeting in the F.A.I. calendar.

Over the last few years members of the club have been responsible for the running of all the S.A.A. events in Slope, Thermal, Electric and Hand Launch Glider events in Scotland. This is quite a privilege for the club.

The group has expanded its boundaries to allow further members to join, fly and compete under the banner of Fife-Soarers. This has been beneficial to all concerned.

The group is now some 15 members strong and growing.

In line with the S.A.A. policies  the group has been formalised into a Nationally recognised club with rules and regulations. The rules are primarily safety orientated and are documented in the Fife-Soarers rules page.

Membership fees are being kept to a minimum, covering only the costs involved in maintaining good relationships with the farmers who allow us to use their land for our flying sites.

The future aims of the club are to promote all forms of model soaring flight, the only power that is allowed to be flown within the club is electric thermal assist models.

In competition we allow electro-slot competitions to be flown on our sites.

We are actively seeking new members, from beginner to expert.

With the depth of knowledge and experience that is in the club, beginners can be taught to fly quickly and safely. This is one of the main aims of the club.

If this page is new to you, and you are interested in model soaring, then please give us a call via e mail.

Let us lead you through the pitfalls that can dog beginners, and take you to the heights of a good thermal with a smile on your face.
